Yoane Wissa double gives Newcastle a 2-1 win at Valencia

Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Valencia 2-1 at Mestalla. Yoane Wissa scored both Newcastle goals after Filip Ugrinic had opened the scoring.
Valencia played with ten men from the 35th minute. Captain Jose Luis Gaya was dismissed for a high challenge on Anthony Elanga.
Ugrinic gave Valencia an early lead
Valencia moved ahead inside four minutes. Ugrinic received the ball outside the area and curled a 25-yard shot into the top corner. Newcastle responded quickly through a high recovery by Nick Woltemade. Harvey Barnes released William Osula, whose low shot reached the side-netting.
Elanga then put the ball in the net after a pass from Jacob Ramsey. The assistant referee raised the flag for offside and the effort did not count. Gaya and Javi Guerra later tested the Newcastle defence. New goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek made his debut after joining from Braga earlier in the week.
Gaya’s red card changed the balance
The decisive disciplinary moment arrived after 35 minutes. Gaya challenged Elanga with a high lunge, and the referee showed a direct red card. Elanga left the pitch on a stretcher and Jacob Murphy replaced him. Newcastle later reported that the first indications were less serious than the scene suggested.
Valencia protected its lead until half-time despite the numerical disadvantage. Hornicek also saved Guerra’s effort shortly before the interval. Newcastle entered the break one goal behind but with an extra player. Matthias Jaissle prepared four changes for the beginning of the second half.
Wissa equalised after entering at half-time
Wissa joined Sean Steur, Bazoumana Toure and Mason Miley at the restart. The new forward replaced Osula at the centre of Newcastle’s attack. Valencia goalkeeper Stole Dimitrievski first watched his team test Hornicek through Guido Rodriguez. Newcastle then punished a defensive error at the other end.
Wissa collected the loose ball and finished through Dimitrievski’s legs. The goal levelled the match and changed the pressure on the ten home players. Ramsey later sent a low effort narrowly wide. Joelinton, Joe Willock and Dylan Charlton entered as Jaissle continued changing the side.
A quick counter created the winning goal
Newcastle’s second goal began with a fast transition. Toure carried the ball down the left while Wissa moved into the central space. Toure chose a low square pass instead of shooting from a narrow angle. Wissa reached it and scored his second goal of the night.
The double completed Newcastle’s comeback and secured the Trofeo Naranja. It also gave Jaissle a victory in his first match as head coach. Young defender Henry Johnson received a debut during the second half. He replaced Malick Thiaw, who had worn the captain’s armband on his birthday.
The result closed an eventful evening at Mestalla
Valencia’s presentation preceded the final Trofeo Naranja at the current Mestalla. The club plans to move to its new stadium during the following summer. Newcastle faced an early deficit, an injury concern and a ten-player opponent. The team still needed two accurate finishes to turn those circumstances into a win.
Wissa supplied both goals after starting on the bench. Toure’s assist for the winner also gave the second-half changes a direct effect on the score. The official result remains 2-1 to Newcastle. Ugrinic scored first, Gaya was dismissed, and Wissa settled the match with his second-half double.
Elanga’s injury followed the red-card challenge
Jose Gaya was sent off in the 35th minute for a high challenge on Anthony Elanga. The Newcastle winger required treatment and left on a stretcher. Valencia therefore continued with ten players. Newcastle also had to reorganise after losing one of its starting attackers.

The incident changed the shape of the friendly before halftime. Valencia still carried its one-goal lead into the interval. Elanga’s condition remained more important than the numerical advantage. The match continued only after the medical staff completed its work.
Wissa changed the result after entering
Yoane Wissa joined the game at halftime and scored twice. His first goal cancelled the early strike from Filip Ugrinic. The winner followed a quick Newcastle attack. Eliesse Ben Seghir Toure provided the pass that allowed Wissa to complete his second finish.
Matthias Jaissle collected a victory in his first match in charge. The team also received the Trofeo Naranja after the final whistle. The evening still contained a serious injury concern. Newcastle’s comeback and trophy did not remove the attention around Elanga’s departure.
The substitute changed both the score and the pace
Wissa entered after halftime with Newcastle behind by one goal. His two finishes turned that deficit into victory during the second period.
Valencia played with ten men after Gaya’s dismissal. Newcastle used the extra space, while Wissa completed the decisive counterattack late in the match.
