Thomas Tuchel commits to leading England into Euro 2028

Thomas Tuchel says he is fully committed to leading England at Euro 2028. The manager spoke after England lost 2-1 to Argentina in the World Cup semi-final.
His late switch to a back five drew criticism after England had led through Anthony Gordon and then conceded twice.
Tuchel recently extended his contract through the next European Championship. The Football Association continues to support him after a run to the last four.
He accepts that England became too passive after scoring and believes the team still has another level to find before the home European tournament.
The decision follows England’s World Cup semi-final
England lost 2-1 to Argentina after taking the lead in the semi-final. The defeat ended their World Cup but did not end Tuchel’s time with the national team.
He confirmed after the tournament that he wants to continue. The Football Association also supports that position, which gives the next campaign a settled head coach.
Anthony Gordon gave England the lead against Argentina. The advantage lasted into the closing part of the semi-final before Lionel Messi created two late goals. Argentina won 2-1 and took the place in the World Cup final.
England ended the tournament with a top-four finish.
Tuchel’s contract now runs through Euro 2028
The agreement covers the next European Championship cycle. Euro 2028 will be staged in the United Kingdom and Ireland, giving England matches in a home tournament setting.
The contract runs through Euro 2028. No guaranteed tournament result or separate two-year programme was published with it.
Tuchel used a back five late in the match, and that decision became part of the post-game discussion. He also accepted that England had become too passive after scoring. Those are comments about a completed semi-final.
They are not turned into a fixed system for the next two years.
England reached the last four in North America
Tuchel led England through the group stage and knockout rounds before the loss to Argentina. A semi-final place kept the team among the final four nations at the World Cup.
The tournament record includes both progress and disappointment. England came close to another final, but two late Lionel Messi assists changed the semi-final.

The Football Association extended Tuchel’s agreement before the Euro 2028 campaign. Its support remained in place after the World Cup defeat. The contract provides continuity through the next tournament.
It does not remove the normal process of selecting squads for every international window.
The new agreement arrives after England’s World Cup semifinal against Argentina ended England’s campaign.

The coach said he still believes in the squad
Tuchel spoke about the team’s potential after the defeat. His decision to stay shows that he wants another tournament with the same national association.
That statement is different from assigning future places to individual players. Selection for later matches will depend on form, fitness and each official squad announcement.
Euro 2028 will be hosted by the United Kingdom and Ireland. England therefore expect to play the tournament in familiar stadiums and without the travel pattern of the 2026 World Cup.
Qualification rules and the final match schedule remain controlled by UEFA.
The FA chose continuity after the tournament
The association retained Tuchel after the World Cup instead of opening another coaching search. His agreement now continues through the next major competition.
Continuity gives England one coach for the qualification period. Friendlies, qualifiers and squad announcements will provide the later sporting record.
England reached the World Cup semi-final with the same coach who will lead the next cycle. That gives the FA a recent tournament record to assess.
The run included enough progress to reach the last four and enough difficulty to leave clear questions after the Argentina defeat.

Euro 2028 is the next fixed destination
The host setting gives England a clear competition date beyond the World Cup. Qualification and preparation matches will come first under the international calendar.
Those fixtures have not all been played or selected. Training targets and the final tournament squad were not part of the contract announcement.
Tuchel said he believed the squad had another level. The phrase is kept as his assessment, not as an editorial promise. Results in later qualifiers and friendlies will show the team’s level.
No invented number of wins, goals or young players is attached to the contract.
The new agreement separates the result from the future
Argentina remain the team that eliminated England in 2026. Tuchel’s extended contract cannot change that result, but it decides who will lead the next cycle.
England leave the World Cup with the coach’s position confirmed. Later performances will provide the evidence for how the decision develops.
England therefore move from a North American World Cup semi-final to a European cycle based closer to home. The coach remains the same, while every squad and result in that cycle is still to be decided.
