Sunderland extend Timur Tutierov’s contract after his Exeter loan

Sunderland have agreed a new contract with Ukrainian forward Timur Tutierov. His extension follows a useful loan at Exeter City and a strong return during summer preparation.

Tutierov is 21 and can play from the wing or through central attacking areas. He has not made a competitive senior appearance for Sunderland. His recent work has nevertheless moved him closer to first-team consideration.

The Exeter loan supplied senior minutes

Tutierov joined Exeter during the second half of last season. League One gave him regular contact against experienced defenders. He made 17 league appearances and contributed three goals with one assist.

The seventeen appearances moved his record beyond academy football. Exeter used him across the attack during the loan. Three goals and one assist formed his first senior league return.

Exeter provided a different level from Sunderland’s under-twenty-one competition. Tutierov faced League One opponents over several months. He then returned to Sunderland after the scheduled loan period.

Sunderland cited the senior minutes when announcing his progress. The club could compare those matches with his earlier academy record. The extension followed after his return from Exeter.

Academy form built the first case

Tutierov has played 44 times for Sunderland’s under-21 side. He recorded 16 goals and five assists in those matches. Last season began with six goals and one assist across his first seven league appearances.

That run showed he had moved beyond occasional production at academy level. The next challenge was repeating useful actions against senior players. Exeter provided that step without ending his connection to Sunderland.

Development staff have followed him since his arrival from Ukraine. Moving countries added language and cultural adjustment to the normal demands of football. His continued progress reflects work away from match day as well.

The new contract extends Sunderland’s link with a player developed inside its academy. It does not contain a published first-team guarantee. Tutierov remains part of the summer preparation group.

Pre-season offered an immediate reminder

Tutierov scored and assisted in Sunderland’s 5-1 preparation win over York City. The performance showed confidence after his loan. It also placed him directly in front of the senior coaching staff.

One friendly cannot decide a season, but the actions were relevant. He attacked space, joined combinations and finished an opportunity. Those are the same qualities Sunderland need from a flexible forward.

The club’s football leadership praised his attitude and willingness to learn. They also noted the progress made during the Exeter spell. The extension reflects that wider record rather than one summer result.

Noel Aseko also earned a long contract after a senior loan. His route offers a separate example of a young player progressing through first-team matches.

The next role has not been fixed

Tutierov remains with Sunderland’s preparation group after returning from Exeter. The club has not announced another loan or a permanent move. His new agreement keeps that decision under Sunderland’s control.

His return also changed the level of his daily work. He moved from League One matches into Sunderland’s senior summer group.

The attacker can play from a wide position or move into central areas. Exeter used that flexibility during his seventeen League One appearances. Sunderland also used him in attack against York City.

His York performance produced one goal and one assist in a 5-1 win. That friendly followed three goals and one assist during the Exeter loan. Both periods preceded the contract announcement.
