Melbourne City academy graduates score three in Australia Cup win

Melbourne City beat Weston Bears 3-0 in the first national knockout round. Lawrence Wong scored early before Besian Kutleshi and Medin Memeti added late goals. All three scorers developed through the Melbourne City academy.
Ten academy graduates started City’s first competitive match of the new season. Nathaniel Atkinson captained the side while Aziz Behich remained on leave. The win placed City in the Round of 16.
Wong rewards City’s quick opening
Aurelio Vidmar selected a young team with experience across the back line. James Nieuwenhuizen started in goal behind Harrison Delbridge and Liam Bonetig. Atkinson led the side from full-back. Max Caputo played at the front of the attack.
Caputo created the first clear chance inside the opening minutes. Weston’s goalkeeper saved after City moved the ball down the left. The visitors kept possession around the edge of the area. Their early pressure produced the opening goal after six minutes.
Wong received the ball outside the penalty area. He chose an early shot before the defence could step forward. The strike reached the net and gave City a calm start. Weston now had to leave more space while searching for an equaliser.
Delbridge organised the defence during Weston’s response. Peter Antoniou also stayed composed beside him. The hosts struggled to turn possession into close-range chances. City controlled the first half without adding another goal.
Nieuwenhuizen protects the narrow lead
Weston’s best first-half opening came in the thirty-fifth minute. A forward reached the ball at a tight angle inside the box. Nieuwenhuizen moved quickly to his right and made the save. The stop allowed City to enter half-time with a one-goal lead.
The second half became more balanced. Weston held the ball for longer periods but created few clear shots. City also found less space behind the home defence. The score stayed unchanged through the first twenty minutes after the break.

Vidmar introduced Andrew Nabbout, Angus Mackintosh and Roland Ballah together. The changes added fresh movement across midfield and attack. Ballah’s appearance was his senior debut for Melbourne City. The eighteen-year-old had impressed for the club’s NPL side.
City did not force the next chance through repeated crosses. The visitors stayed patient and waited for space outside the area. That choice suited Kutleshi when the ball reached him. His low shot changed the final ten minutes.
Two late goals secure the Round of 16 place
Kutleshi struck from distance with ten minutes remaining. The ball travelled low into the bottom corner. It was his first senior goal in Melbourne City colours. The finish gave Weston very little time to recover.
Isiah Boston then became City’s second debutant of the afternoon. The academy player entered after the second goal. His appearance added another young player to an already youthful team. City still kept its shape during the closing minutes.
The third goal began with Nieuwenhuizen inside his own half. Bonetig played a precise pass forward into midfield. Nabbout helped the ball into Memeti’s path. Memeti lifted his finish over the advancing goalkeeper.

The move travelled from one end of the pitch to the other. It also involved a goalkeeper, defender, substitute and academy attacker. Memeti’s calm finish completed the scoring five minutes from time. City ended the match with three goals and a clean sheet.
Academy players score all three goals
The starting team contained only one player outside City’s academy pathway. That detail gave the cup match extra value for the club’s development group. The young players did not rely on a late rescue from senior substitutes. Wong had already placed City ahead in the opening minutes.
The substitutes still helped settle a difficult second half. Nabbout took part in the move for the third goal. Ballah and Boston received their first senior minutes. Kutleshi scored before Weston could build sustained late pressure.

Weston made City work for the result between the goals. The hosts remained within one strike until the final ten minutes. Nieuwenhuizen’s first-half save therefore remained important. A home equaliser could have changed the pace of the second half.
The Round of 16 draw follows after the remaining ties. City next returns to pre-season work before facing Palermo. Its first competitive result already contains a clear academy contribution. Three graduates scored, and two more players made senior debuts.
Academy players complete a senior cup task
City trusted academy graduates across almost every part of the starting team. The young group kept its positions after Wong’s early finish. Weston therefore found few open routes through the centre. The visitors protected the lead without retreating around their own area.
Captain Nathaniel Atkinson gave the lineup an experienced reference point. He helped City manage the periods when Weston pushed forward. The Bears competed well enough to keep the margin narrow. City still controlled the most important spaces around both boxes.
Roland Ballah and Isiah Boston received their senior debuts. Their appearances extended an evening built around the club’s academy. Neither player entered a comfortable exhibition match. The cup tie remained open until the final ten minutes.
Kutleshi’s goal removed the pressure from the closing phase. Memeti added another finish before Weston could recover. Both goals came after the young side had defended a small lead. City advanced with a clean sheet and three different scorers.
The scorers represented different stages of Melbourne City’s development system. One started the match, another entered from the bench, and each stayed composed. Weston Bears continued working after the first goal and forced several defensive actions. City’s young players answered those moments without losing their attacking shape.
The late substitutions did not change City’s defensive record. Delbridge and Bonetig remained organised in front of Nieuwenhuizen. Weston finished the tie without a goal despite competing strongly.
