Leeds United beat RB Leipzig 2-0 over 120 minutes

Leeds United defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 at Elland Road. Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored early before Lukas Nmecha added the second goal during an extended 120-minute friendly.

The format allowed both clubs to distribute more playing time. Leeds used separate groups across the two hours and kept Leipzig from scoring.

Calvert-Lewin scored after seven minutes

Leeds began with high intensity and won an early corner through Daniel James. A goal-line scramble followed, but the referee disallowed the first finish for a foul. Joe Rodon then advanced on the right and delivered a low cross. Calvert-Lewin met it from close range and gave Leeds the lead.

James Justin forced a low save soon afterwards. James also ran onto a pass from Sean Longstaff but sent his shot narrowly wide of the near post. Leipzig tested Alex Cairns through efforts from distance. The goalkeeper parried one drive and also stopped a half-volley from Andrija Maksimovic.

Leeds created further chances before the first break

Calvert-Lewin attacked another Longstaff delivery and directed a strong header toward goal. Maarten Vandevoordt moved across his line and made the save. Tarik Muharemovic then sent a long pass behind the Leipzig defence. Justin collected it and found Harry Wilson, whose first-time shot passed the post.

Leeds entered the first interval with a 1-0 advantage. The score was supported by several chances rather than one isolated attack. Daniel Farke made five changes before the second hour. Ao Tanaka, Anton Stach, Jaka Bijol, Jayden Lienou and Nmecha joined the game.

The second hour developed more slowly

Both teams changed personnel and needed time to rebuild their passing rhythm. Leeds held longer spells of possession through the middle of the pitch. Wilson reacted to a loose ball outside the area, but a Leipzig defender blocked his left-footed shot. Brenden Aaronson later dragged an attempt wide.

Aaronson also escaped down the right and crossed toward Justin. Vandevoordt collected the pass before the defender could finish from close range. Willy Gnonto and academy players Alfie Cresswell and Rhys Chadwick entered later. Their arrival gave Leeds fresh width during the final part of the match.

Nmecha finished Gnonto’s cutback

Gnonto released Aaronson during one promising move, but Nmecha could not reach the following square pass. Leeds repeated a similar attack later. This time Gnonto reached the byline and cut the ball back accurately. Nmecha finished from close range to double the lead.

The goal arrived in the 109th minute because the friendly lasted two hours. It came during the extra thirty minutes agreed for the match. Cresswell nearly added a third with a header against the crossbar. Leipzig still could not find a reply before the referee ended the second hour.

The extended format served a clear fitness purpose

Leeds and Leipzig agreed to play 120 minutes before the match. The arrangement increased the total workload without requiring a second fixture. Cairns remained in goal, while the outfield selection changed more heavily. Some players completed longer blocks and others joined for controlled periods.

A crowd of 24,630 watched the new Leeds home kit appear at Elland Road. The result followed earlier summer wins against Sunderland and Liverpool. Leeds next face Manchester United in Dublin. They leave the Leipzig match with two striker goals, no concession and a complete two-hour workload.

The teams agreed to play two hours

The friendly used four periods and lasted 120 minutes. That arrangement gave both coaches more playing time than a normal ninety-minute match. Leeds changed personnel between the periods without ending the contest. Leipzig followed the same extended format with its own squad.

A crowd of 24,630 attended the match. Supporters therefore watched two full hours rather than a standard pre-season game. The unusual length matters when reading the score. Calvert-Lewin struck early, while Nmecha’s goal arrived after the normal ninety minutes.

Both goals came from different groups

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored after seven minutes. His early finish rewarded the opening Leeds selection. Lukas Nmecha added the second goal in the 109th minute. Wilfried Gnonto created the chance with a cutback from the attacking side.

The two scorers therefore worked in different parts of the extended match. Leeds retained its defensive record through every period. Leipzig had extra time to seek a response but did not score. Leeds completed the full 120 minutes with a two-goal advantage.

The extended match produced one goal in each phase

Calvert-Lewin scored during the opening minutes of the standard match period. Nmecha added the second after play moved beyond ninety minutes.

Leeds also prevented Leipzig from scoring across the full two hours. The extra period gave both coaching staffs more playing time for their squads.
