Johan Manzambi joins Aston Villa after 58 Freiburg appearances

Johan Manzambi has joined Aston Villa from Freiburg. Both clubs confirmed the transfer on 17 July. The 20-year-old midfielder leaves Germany after 58 competitive appearances, nine goals and eleven assists for Freiburg.
The clubs did not publish a fee. Reports value the deal at up to 70 million euros; neither club published a price. Freiburg confirmed only that negotiations produced an agreement that benefited both sides.
Freiburg signed him from Servette in 2023
Manzambi moved from Servette Geneva to Freiburg in January 2023. He first played for the German club’s under-19 and under-23 teams. The first-team promotion followed before the 2024/25 season.
His professional debut came in September 2024. Freiburg won 3-0 away at Heidenheim, and Manzambi entered as a substitute. The appearance began a two-season rise into regular senior football.
He scored his first Bundesliga goal in April 2025. The 90th-minute finish gave Freiburg a 2-1 away victory over Borussia Monchengladbach. It became the first of nine club goals in his confirmed Freiburg total.
His club total reached 58 matches
The 58 appearances cover the Bundesliga, Europa League and German Cup. Manzambi also supplied eleven assists across those competitions. Freiburg used him through domestic and European weeks.
His final European campaign ended in the Europa League final against Aston Villa. Freiburg lost 3-0 in Istanbul. Manzambi started and tested goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez during the first half.
He had also scored during the semi-final victory over Braga. That 41st-minute goal helped Freiburg reach the first European final in club history. Villa then signed him after facing him in the final.

Switzerland gave him a senior debut in 2025
Manzambi made his senior international debut for Switzerland in June 2025. He has since collected 16 appearances and six goals. Half of those goals came at the 2026 World Cup.
He scored twice after entering against Bosnia and Herzegovina during the group stage. His tournament total later reached three. Freiburg’s official summary lists 58 appearances and ten goals.
The World Cup extended his season beyond the club calendar. The transfer was confirmed while the tournament was still in its final week. Aston Villa did not announce a separate recovery schedule.
The 70-million figure remains reported
| Player | Johan Manzambi, 20 |
|---|---|
| Freiburg record | 58 matches, 9 goals, 11 assists |
| Switzerland record | 16 caps, 6 goals |
| Fee status | Undisclosed; up to 70 million euros reported |
Outside reports describe the deal as a Villa record and value the full package at around 70 million euros. Neither Aston Villa nor Freiburg published that amount. The 70 million euro figure remains a media estimate rather than a club figure.
No official bonus conditions or payment schedule are available. Neither club published the add-on structure or the guaranteed amount. The transfer itself is complete, while the exact price remains private.
Another club rebuilding its attack is Ajax after the signing of Marcos Leonardo.
This status differs from the Ajax transfer announced on the same date. Ajax published their fee for Marcos Leonardo. Villa and Freiburg chose not to provide one for Manzambi.
Villa begin the league season at Brighton
Aston Villa open the 2026/27 Premier League campaign away to Brighton on 23 August. The first home match follows against champions Arsenal. Those fixtures were confirmed before Manzambi’s arrival.
Villa enter the season as Europa League winners and Champions League participants. Freiburg referred to both achievements in their transfer statement. Manzambi moves from the losing finalist to the club that won the May final.

The completed record is clear before pre-season selection begins. Manzambi is an Aston Villa player after three and a half years at Freiburg. The fee is private, despite the reported 70-million-euro valuation.
Freiburg recorded every stage of his rise
Manzambi joined Freiburg from Servette in January 2023. He first played for the under-19 and under-23 teams. His senior Bundesliga debut followed in September 2024.
That debut came in a 3-0 win over Heidenheim. His first Bundesliga goal arrived in April 2025. It was a 90th-minute winner away to Borussia Monchengladbach.
Manzambi finished his Freiburg career with 58 first-team matches. He scored nine goals and supplied 11 assists. He also started the 2026 Europa League final against Aston Villa.
Switzerland gave him a senior debut in June 2025. He has 16 caps and six goals. Three of those goals came during the 2026 World Cup.
Freiburg and Aston Villa confirmed the transfer on 17 July. Neither club published the fee. Reports placed the full package near 70 million euros, while both club announcements omitted the price.
The Europa League connected the two clubs before the transfer
Manzambi scored against Braga in Freiburg’s Europa League semi-final. Freiburg then reached the final against Aston Villa.
He started that final, which Villa won 3-0. The transfer followed later in the summer after both clubs had completed the European campaign.
Manzambi joins Villa after 58 Freiburg appearances and a season that ended with the two clubs meeting in the Europa League final. His new contract runs for five years and places one of Freiburg’s most-used young players in Villa’s midfield group.
