Gateshead draw 1-1 with Newcastle after Luke Supyk scores

Gateshead drew 1-1 with Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly at Gateshead International Stadium. New signing Luke Supyk scored first. Newcastle equalised when Ben Williams turned the ball into his own net.
Supyk made an immediate impact
Gateshead gave Supyk his first start only days after announcing his two-year contract. The New Zealand forward joined after leaving Wellington Phoenix and completing a successful trial.
He had already scored three times during that trial period with the National League club. His first official appearance in the starting team brought another goal after 34 minutes.
Gateshead reached the Newcastle area despite spending long periods without the ball. Supyk completed the attack and placed the home side ahead before halftime.
The goal rewarded a compact opening from the team coached by Lee Cattermole. Gateshead protected the centre and looked for direct passes when Newcastle moved forward.
Billy Chadwick and Ashley Boatswain supported Supyk across the home front line. Harry Chapman worked behind those attackers and helped connect the midfield with them.
Newcastle started with a mixed team
Newcastle included senior players and academy prospects in its first public friendly of the summer. Nick Pope started in goal behind Fabian Schär, Alex Murphy, Leo Shahar and Lewis Hall.
Sean Steur received a place in midfield beside Jacob Ramsey after his work with the academy. Jacob Murphy captained the side from the right and Harvey Barnes started on the left.

Joe Willock operated between those wide players, with Sean Neave leading the attack. The visitors controlled most possession and moved Gateshead back for long spells.
Their passing created several entries into the area before and after the opening goal. Gateshead goalkeeper Adam Desbois dealt with the shots that reached his target.
The home defenders also blocked routes through the middle of their penalty area. Supyk’s goal therefore remained the only difference when the first half ended.
Newcastle continue attacking after halftime
Newcastle continued to hold the ball after the interval and increased its shooting total. The visitors finished with twelve attempts, while Gateshead recorded four during the match.
Five Newcastle shots reached the target, compared with one effort from the hosts. Those figures showed the pressure, but they did not produce a goal from a Newcastle player.

Gateshead stayed organised after Supyk left the field on the hour mark. Dominic Telford replaced him and continued the work against Newcastle’s central defenders.
Cattermole also used other substitutes as the friendly moved through its final half hour. Newcastle introduced several young players from a large bench during the same period.
The fresh players kept the match moving at a useful pace despite the many changes. Gateshead still carried its one-goal advantage into the closing part of the game.
An own goal gives Newcastle the equaliser
Newcastle finally equalised with eleven minutes of normal time remaining. The decisive touch came from Gateshead substitute Ben Williams rather than a visiting attacker.

Williams turned the ball into his own net and changed the score to 1-1. The goal followed another period of Newcastle pressure around the home penalty area.
Gateshead had allowed few clear openings despite Newcastle’s large share of possession. The own goal removed the lead but did not erase the home side’s earlier defensive work.
Newcastle then sent Vakhtang Salia into the attack during the closing minutes. The visitors searched for a winner while Gateshead protected the point.
The score remained 1-1 until the final whistle. The draw became the first meeting between the clubs to finish level in recent years.
A minute’s silence precedes the 1-1 draw
The friendly gave Newcastle senior players their first public match action of pre-season. Both teams observed a minute’s silence for Kevin Keegan before kickoff inside the stadium.
The players also wore black armbands throughout the match in his memory. It also placed Steur, Neave and Shahar alongside established Premier League teammates.
Jacob Murphy wore the captain’s armband and remained one of Newcastle’s busiest attackers. Gateshead tested its new forward against Schär and other experienced defenders.
Supyk answered with a goal during his first start for the club. Desbois and the home defence then protected that advantage for most of the afternoon.
Newcastle’s pressure eventually produced an equaliser without bringing a winning goal. The final score reflected two different strengths shown across the match.
Gateshead used its limited chances well, while Newcastle controlled territory and possession. A home opener and a late own goal completed the 1-1 result.
