Chelsea agree a record fee for Morgan Rogers before Monday’s medical

Chelsea have agreed a reported £117 million fee with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers. The transfer is not complete yet. The 23-year-old returned from England’s World Cup campaign in the United States. His medical with Chelsea is currently scheduled for Monday.
The proposed contract runs for six years, with reports also describing an option for one more season. If every final step is completed, Rogers will become Chelsea’s record signing. The fee would pass the £115 million paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023.
The agreement still has two important steps
An agreement between clubs allows the medical and contract work to continue. It is not the same as a completed transfer. Rogers must pass the medical checks and sign the documents. Chelsea also require registration clearance before presenting him as their player.
The medical is planned for Monday because Rogers has been in the United States with England. His national team reached the World Cup semifinal. Argentina won that match 2-1, and Rogers supplied the pass for Anthony Gordon’s goal.
Other clubs had also monitored Rogers before Chelsea reached the agreement. Villa held a strong position because his existing contract ran until 2031.
That contract meant Villa did not need a quick sale. The reported £117 million fee would set a Chelsea record if the transfer is completed.
Rogers scored 14 goals and supplied 11 assists in 55 Villa appearances last season. Ten of those goals came in the Premier League. He also played a central part in Villa’s Europa League victory.

Villa beat Freiburg 3-0 in the final. Rogers created the first goal and scored the third. The trophy was Villa’s first major European honour since 1982. His final performance gave Chelsea a recent example from a high-pressure match.
Rogers joined Middlesbrough from Manchester City in July 2023. Villa signed him six months later. He became an England international in November 2024. He has now made 21 senior appearances.
Rogers scored a hat-trick against Celtic in January 2025. Villa won that Champions League match 4-2. The goals added another clear entry to his senior record.
Rogers has played across the attacking line
Rogers has played as a winger and an attacking midfielder. Villa often used him from the left side. He also appeared behind a central striker.
His 2025/26 record contains both goals and assists. He scored 14 times and created 11 goals in 55 appearances. Four goals came outside the Premier League.
Chelsea already have several attackers, including Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro and Estevao. Rogers would add another player with recent Premier League experience. His exact role remains unconfirmed.
A separate completed move sent Noel Aseko from Bayern to Eintracht Frankfurt.
| Reported fee | £117 million |
|---|---|
| Proposed contract | Six years, with a reported one-year option |
| Medical | Planned for Monday |
| 2025/26 output | 14 goals and 11 assists in 55 Villa matches |
Rogers is 23 and has played in England throughout his senior career. He would not need to change leagues. He would still join a different squad and coaching system.
No squad number or first appearance has been confirmed. Those details can only follow the medical, signed documents and registration.
Middlesbrough will receive a major share
Middlesbrough included a sell-on clause when Rogers moved to Villa. The clause gives the club 20 percent of Villa’s profit. Reports place the new payment to Middlesbrough at about £20.3 million.

Villa paid Middlesbrough £15.5 million for Rogers. Middlesbrough had bought him from Manchester City for about £1.1 million. The latest agreement would take Middlesbrough’s total return from the player to about £35.8 million.
The clause is important because it changes Villa’s net income from the sale. A £117 million headline fee does not remain in one account. Middlesbrough’s share must be removed before Villa calculate the final profit available for other work.
Villa would lose a player who produced 25 goals and assists last season. That sporting loss remains conditional because the transfer is not complete.
Middlesbrough receive this return without negotiating the new transfer. Their protection was written into the 2024 sale. The clause protects Middlesbrough after accepting a smaller initial fee. It now creates a major return because Rogers developed quickly.
The medical and paperwork remain unfinished
Chelsea finished tenth in the Premier League last season. Their first league match is away to Fulham on August 24. The proposed move would be completed several weeks before that fixture.
The six-year proposal would create a long financial commitment. Reports also describe an option for one additional season. Chelsea have not announced either term officially.
The clubs have agreed the transfer fee, but the deal is not complete. Monday’s medical and the final paperwork remain necessary. Chelsea can register Rogers only after those steps are finished.
Rogers has just returned from England’s World Cup campaign. His next confirmed step is Monday’s medical. Training dates have not been announced.
