Tromso score five away to CFR Cluj as Dahlqvist hits hat-trick

Tromso won 5-0 away to CFR Cluj in the Conference League third qualifying round. Isak Dahlqvist scored three of the Norwegian club’s goals.
Tromso scored five goals and did not concede in their largest European result of the summer. CFR now travel north with a five-goal deficit.
Tromso built an early lead
CFR entered the home leg expecting to use its experience in European qualifying. Tromso instead settled quickly and denied the Romanian side an early period of pressure. The visitors kept their lines close when CFR held possession. They then moved forward with direct passes after recovering the ball. Tromso’s first goal changed the shape of the match. CFR had to send more players forward, which increased the space available behind its midfield.
The Norwegian side continued attacking those areas rather than protecting a narrow lead. Its forward runs arrived from several positions and forced CFR’s defenders to turn toward their own goal. A second goal placed Tromso in control before the match reached its final phase. CFR still had time to respond, but the visitors did not lose their defensive organisation.
Dahlqvist scored a hat-trick
Dahlqvist played from a role that allowed him to arrive beyond the first attacking line. His movement gave CFR another runner to track during transitions. The Swedish player converted three separate chances and completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute. His third goal also moved the score to 5-0. A hat-trick from a supporting position shows how Tromso shared its attacking responsibility. Teammates created space for Dahlqvist to complete three separate moves.
Dahlqvist used the spaces created by teammates ahead of him. He also maintained his runs after Tromso established a comfortable lead. The final goal completed an exceptional personal evening. It also confirmed that CFR had not found a way to stop the visitors’ repeated movement from deeper positions.
Tromso also completed the match without conceding
A five-goal win is especially valuable when the visiting team also avoids conceding. CFR could not reduce the deficit with a late response. Tromso defended the penalty area with several players close enough to cover loose balls. The team also avoided unnecessary fouls near shooting range. CFR had periods on the ball, but possession did not become enough clear chances. Tromso’s goalkeeper and defenders completed each dangerous phase.
CFR did not score at home, so the aggregate margin remains five goals. Only a large scoring run would reopen the contest. Tromso begin the second leg with a wide margin. A controlled opening would prevent CFR from gaining early confidence in Norway.
CFR Cluj face a five-goal deficit in Norway
European qualifying usually leaves both teams with several possible approaches after the first leg. A five-goal difference narrows those choices sharply. CFR enter the return five goals behind and require an attacking approach. That situation gives Tromso more counterattacking space. Tromso already hold the large advantage from the first meeting. Longer possession and protected central areas would make CFR cover more distance.
The Norwegian club also carries confidence from winning away. The surface and local climate will be more familiar during the return. Both penalty areas produced CFR’s largest problems. If Tromso score again, CFR will need an even larger recovery.
Five goals came from continued pressure
Tromso did not stop after establishing the first clear margin. The visitors continued completing attacks and turned a strong result into a dominant one. Dahlqvist’s hat-trick supplied most of the headline, but two other goals were also required. The score therefore reflected a complete team performance. CFR’s home advantage did not produce control. The Romanian side conceded throughout the match and failed to build sustained attacks.

The second leg still remains on the schedule. Its sporting context is now completely different because Tromso hold a 5-0 aggregate lead. The first meeting offered a simple conclusion. Tromso were more accurate in attack, more secure in defence and consistent across the full match.
Tromso converted chances throughout the match
Tromso combined Dahlqvist’s three goals with two goals from teammates. The scoring contribution therefore extended beyond one exceptional individual display. CFR Cluj failed to score a single goal. Tromso therefore take a five-goal aggregate lead into the return match in Norway.
Dahlqvist completed his hat-trick before the final whistle. Each goal increased pressure on a CFR side already chasing the match. The return still forms part of the tie, but the first leg created a direct picture. Tromso hold a large lead after scoring repeatedly and defending every home attack.
