Benfica score six against Hearts in Europa League first leg

Benfica defeated Hearts 6-1 at the Estadio da Luz. Rafa Silva opened the scoring after three minutes, and the Portuguese side held a three-goal lead by half-time.
Hearts replied after the break, but Benfica added two late goals. The teams will complete the third qualifying round tie in Edinburgh next week.
Rafa gave Benfica an immediate lead
Benfica began with Samuel Soares in goal and Vangelis Pavlidis leading the attack. Rafa played close to the striker, while Gianluca Prestianni offered width from the opening minutes. The home side needed only three minutes to score. A quick passing move opened the visiting defence, and Rafa completed the attack. The early goal allowed Benfica to control possession without rushing. Hearts spent long periods inside their own half. The Scottish side tried to keep its defensive lines close together. Benfica continued moving the ball between both wings.
Tomas Araujo doubled the lead after 23 minutes. His goal rewarded Benfica’s sustained pressure and made the visitors’ task much harder before the interval. Pavlidis then converted a penalty before half-time. The Greek forward had already scored four times in Benfica’s previous European match. His latest goal gave the hosts a 3-0 advantage.
Prestianni added the fourth after the break
Hearts returned for the second half needing a controlled start. Benfica denied that chance by maintaining pressure around the visiting penalty area. Prestianni scored in the 59th minute with a firm shot from distance. The ball travelled toward the far side of the goal and extended Benfica’s lead to four. The winger’s shot came from a different type of attack than the earlier goals. Rafa had completed a passing move, Araujo scored from a defensive position, and Pavlidis used a penalty.
Benfica’s variety made the margin difficult to contain. Hearts could not protect the centre and both wide areas at the same time. The home side also recovered loose passes quickly. The fourth goal effectively decided the first leg. Hearts still searched for a response and eventually scored once against Benfica.
Hearts scored once before half-time
T. Renaud entered from the bench and scored for Hearts. His goal reduced the score to 4-1 and gave the visiting supporters a positive moment. The response also gave Hearts one away goal before the return. Away goals no longer act as a separate tiebreaker, but every goal still changes the aggregate score. Benfica did not lose control after conceding. The home side continued using fresh players and protected the ball through midfield. Hearts had little time to build another attack.
Marco Silva’s bench included Jhon Duran and Andreas Schjelderup. Both players later affected the final score. Their introduction kept Benfica’s forward line active during the closing minutes. Hearts had worked hard through long defensive phases. Benfica’s replacements then faced tired defenders and found more space during transitions.
Benfica scored twice during the closing minutes
Duran scored Benfica’s fifth goal after a fast counterattack. The forward used the open space left by Hearts as the visitors tried to move higher. Schjelderup converted another penalty during stoppage time. His goal set the final score at 6-1 and gave Benfica a five-goal aggregate advantage. Six different moments created the home goals. The total included two penalties, a distant strike and several open-play attacks. Benfica did not depend on one scorer.
The hosts also spread the goals across the whole evening. Three arrived before half-time, another followed soon after the restart, and two came near the end. Hearts scored once but could not stop Benfica’s late goals. The return match begins with the Scottish club needing an exceptional recovery.

Benfica travel to Edinburgh with a 6-1 lead
Benfica travel to Edinburgh with a 6-1 lead. The Portuguese team can reach the next round with a controlled performance in the return. Benfica’s movement between midfield and attack caused repeated problems for Hearts. Any scoring response in Edinburgh also brings the risk of leaving space behind. The first leg showed Benfica’s depth. Four starters scored before the substitutes added the final two. Samuel Soares also spent most of the match away from heavy pressure.
The result does not formally end the tie because another match remains. It does give Benfica a very large margin after ninety completed minutes. Rafa’s early goal shaped the evening, while the two late goals widened the gap. Benfica now hold one of the strongest positions from the qualifying round.
