Ferencvaros edge Gornik Zabrze in Europa League qualifier

Ferencvaros defeated Gornik Zabrze 1-0 in the first leg of their Europa League third qualifying round tie. Marius Corbu scored midway through the second half.

The Hungarian side protected the narrow lead through the closing stages. The return match will decide which club advances to the play-off round.

Neither team scored before half-time

Ferencvaros began as the home side with more possession. Gornik remained compact and limited the number of clear chances during the opening period. The Polish team defended the central area with discipline. Ferencvaros often moved the ball wide but could not find a simple shot inside the box. Gornik also looked for opportunities after regaining possession. Those attacks gave its defence short breaks and prevented constant pressure around the penalty area.

Neither goalkeeper was beaten before half-time. The 0-0 score kept the tie balanced and increased the importance of the first mistake after the interval. Ferencvaros needed greater speed around the final pass. The home team had useful positions but allowed defenders enough time to recover their shape. Gornik could be satisfied with its organisation. The visitors reached the break without conceding and retained the option of taking the tie home on level terms.

Corbu scored the only goal

The breakthrough arrived in the 65th minute. Brazilian midfielder Cadu created the opening, and Corbu completed the move past goalkeeper Filip Schulze. Corbu’s goal rewarded a more direct spell from Ferencvaros. The Hungarian team moved the ball forward earlier and placed more players close to the box. Gornik now had to change its priorities. The visitors pushed farther up the pitch and searched for an away equaliser.

That adjustment offered Ferencvaros additional space. The home side had chances to extend its advantage but did not find a second goal. Gornik stayed within one goal by defending the later attacks. One home goal would level the aggregate score during the second leg. Gornik did not equalise during the final minutes. Ferencvaros protected Corbu’s goal and completed a 1-0 victory.

Aleksandar Cirkovic made his Ferencvaros debut

Serbian winger Aleksandar Cirkovic entered during added time. These were his first competitive minutes for Ferencvaros after returning from a loan at Lechia Gdansk. The late appearance did not provide much time on the ball. It still marked the start of his competitive spell with the Hungarian club. Cirkovic joined a team protecting a narrow advantage. His immediate task was to help Ferencvaros keep possession and close the available space.

The substitution also gave the home side fresh energy near the touchline. Gornik had pushed more players forward and left room behind its attacking line. Corbu remained the central figure because his goal separated the teams. Cadu’s assist was equally important in creating the clear chance that Ferencvaros converted. The match showed how little separated the clubs. One accurate move changed the score, while the rest of the contest remained tightly controlled.

Ferencvaros travel to Poland with a 1-0 lead

A one-goal lead gives Ferencvaros an advantage but no comfort. Gornik will play the second leg at home and can level the aggregate score by scoring once. Ferencvaros can draw confidence from conceding no goals. The defence limited danger and stayed focused when the visitors increased pressure. Gornik can take encouragement from the same match. The Polish side remained organised, conceded only once and avoided a damaging late second goal.

The winner of the tie will meet Trabzonspor in the play-off round. That future opponent does not change the immediate task for either team. Ferencvaros take a one-goal advantage into the return match. Gornik begin the home leg one goal behind on aggregate. Budapest produced a narrow first-leg result rather than a final answer. Corbu’s goal gives Ferencvaros the lead before the decisive return match.

Ferencvaros did not concede in Budapest

Ferencvaros travel to the return match without an away goal against them. Gornik enter the home leg one goal behind on aggregate. The Hungarian side can use transitions if Gornik sends more players forward. That possibility comes directly from the first-leg score rather than a predicted starting plan.

Gornik showed enough defensive stability to keep the margin narrow in Budapest. Its next task is adding more threat without losing that organisation. Corbu’s goal remains the only difference between the clubs. Ferencvaros begin the return leg ahead, while Gornik can level the aggregate score with one goal.
