Evelina Ijeh hat-trick leads Courage to a five-goal win over Orlando

North Carolina Courage defeated Orlando Pride 5-0 after a powerful attacking display. Evelina Ijeh scored a hat-trick and reached seven league goals. She became the first Swedish woman with an NWSL hat-trick.

Lauryn Thompson opened the scoring in the fourth minute. The goal was the first of her professional career. Ashley Sanchez also scored as North Carolina controlled the match from the start.

Orlando struggled to recover after conceding twice during the opening phase. Courage kept creating chances through quick combinations and strong pressing. The result provided a clear response to their previous defeat.

Thompson scored her first professional goal

North Carolina needed only four minutes to take the lead. Thompson arrived in the right area and completed the early move. The finish became her first goal at professional level.

She also became the youngest Courage scorer in a regular-season match. The record added importance to an already valuable opening goal. Her movement gave Orlando an immediate defensive problem.

The home team continued attacking instead of protecting the advantage. Midfield pressure recovered the ball close to Orlando’s goal. Ijeh benefited from those quick changes of possession.

Orlando lost its passing rhythm during this period. Its defenders faced runners from several directions. Courage used the early confidence to increase the pace.

Ijeh took control of the scoring

Ijeh’s first goal extended the advantage and rewarded her central movement. She stayed between defenders and reacted quickly inside the area. Orlando rarely managed to keep her away from dangerous spaces.

The forward added two more goals as the match opened further. Each finish came after Courage moved the ball with purpose. Her hat-trick combined positioning, timing and calm execution.

The performance lifted Ijeh to seven goals for the season. It also created a new Swedish milestone in the league. No previous Swedish player had scored an NWSL hat-trick.

Her work without the ball supported the scoring record. Ijeh pressed Orlando’s first pass and forced hurried decisions. Those actions helped Courage remain high up the pitch.

Sanchez’s goal added to North Carolina’s lead

Sanchez added the other goal during North Carolina’s dominant performance. The strike became her tenth goal for the club. She repeatedly ran beyond Orlando’s first defensive line from midfield.

She also helped connect possession between the wide and central areas. Courage rarely relied on hopeful deliveries toward Ijeh. Short passes created clearer entries into the penalty area.

Orlando attempted to close the centre after the early damage. Sanchez then found space around the outside of that block. Her choices kept the attack varied throughout the match.

The five goals came from several different routes. Thompson attacked an early opening, while Ijeh dominated central spaces. Sanchez added a runner arriving from deeper midfield.

North Carolina also kept a clean sheet

North Carolina’s attacking work received support from a disciplined defence. Orlando found little room to build sustained pressure. The home team recovered quickly whenever an attack ended.

Natalie Jacobs made her first start since late March. She helped organise the defensive line during long stretches of possession. Her return added another positive detail to the result.

Orlando still had experienced attackers capable of punishing mistakes. Courage limited clean entries and protected the central area. The visitors finished without a goal despite several attempts to respond.

Vilde Boe Risa entered in the eighty-second minute for her club debut. The midfielder joined a match already under firm control. Her appearance completed an encouraging night for the squad.

The clean sheet completed North Carolina’s strongest part of the evening. Orlando turned few longer possessions into clear shots near goal. Courage defenders won the first contact and midfielders collected many loose balls. That work allowed the forwards to continue attacking without leaving an exposed back line.

Courage turned an early lead into a full result

The score reflected North Carolina’s concentration across the full match. An early advantage became sustained pressure rather than a cautious defence. Orlando never received a comfortable route back.

Thompson’s milestone created the opening, and Ijeh supplied the main scoring force. Sanchez then added another important contribution from midfield. Three different stories supported the same team performance.

The clean sheet mattered alongside the five goals. It showed that Courage maintained its structure while attacking with numbers. Jacobs and the wider defence completed that balance.

North Carolina left with a decisive win and several individual landmarks. Orlando left after one of its most difficult nights. Ijeh’s hat-trick remained the defining feature of the match.
