Brandon Bent scores late as Jamaica U20 beat Honduras

Jamaica defeated Honduras in its opening Concacaf U20 Championship match in Puebla. Brandon Bent scored the deciding goal from a corner deep into stoppage time. The late finish gave Jamaica a winning start in Group C.

Jahmarie Nolan had opened the scoring during the first half. Balbás passed into space for Sam Valle before Salazar scored the equaliser. Bent then settled the match with its final decisive attack.

Nolan rewards Jamaica’s early pressure

The match began with both teams trying to play through midfield. Jamaica pressed the first pass and forced Honduras toward the touchlines. That pressure produced several early recoveries in the attacking half.

Nolan broke the deadlock after twenty-two minutes. He found space inside the penalty area and finished Jamaica’s best early move. The goal gave the young Reggae Boyz early control.

Honduras responded by holding the ball for longer periods. Its midfielders moved closer together and sent passes into space behind the defence. Jamaica protected the centre and kept the lead through the interval.

The first-half score reflected Jamaica’s sharper work near goal. Neither side created a constant flow of clear chances. Nolan made the difference by finishing when the opening appeared.

Jamaica also remained disciplined after taking the lead. The defenders avoided unnecessary challenges around their penalty area. Honduras therefore needed a more accurate final pass after the break.

Honduras finds an equaliser

Honduras increased its pressure during the second half. Balbás carried the ball forward and looked for runners between the Jamaican lines. The match gradually moved closer to Jamaica’s goal.

The equaliser arrived with fifteen minutes remaining. Balbás sent a through ball toward Salazar. Valle slightly deflected the pass before it reached the forward. Salazar collected it and placed his finish beyond the goalkeeper.

The move was quick and direct after Jamaica lost its shape. Salazar stayed onside and continued his run through the centre. His calm finish restored level terms for Honduras.

Jamaica did not retreat after conceding. Its wide players continued carrying the ball toward the corners. Fresh runners also kept the Honduran back line under pressure.

The equaliser created an open final period. Honduras looked dangerous when it moved forward in numbers. Jamaica remained a threat from crosses and set pieces.

A corner decides the match

The teams entered stoppage time with one point each. Jamaica continued attacking rather than protecting the draw. A final spell of pressure produced a corner from the right.

The delivery travelled into a crowded six-yard area. Bent reacted first when the ball remained loose near goal. He completed the chance five minutes beyond regulation time.

Honduras had almost no time to build another response. Jamaica managed the restart and kept the ball away from danger. The final whistle followed soon after Bent’s celebration.

The goal changed the group picture at the last moment. Jamaica moved from a draw to three opening points. Honduras left without a reward after recovering during the second half.

Bent’s finish also highlighted Jamaica’s set-piece persistence. The attack had continued after the first contact inside the area. Bent stayed alert and finished after Honduras failed to clear.

Group C moves to the next round

The tournament continues with another group match for both teams. Jamaica next faces Panama, while Honduras meets Canada. Those fixtures will further shape the early Group C standings.

Jamaica carries confidence from a close opening victory. Nolan and Bent supplied goals in different phases of the match. The team also showed patience after losing its first-half advantage.

Honduras has positive work to retain despite the defeat. The move for Salazar’s goal showed quality through the centre. Its next task is protecting late set pieces more securely.

Youth tournaments often give teams little recovery time between games. The staff will review this match while preparing for different opponents. Jamaica begins that process with three points already secured.

The opening Group C result came from one final corner. Jamaica led, lost the lead, and still found the winner. Bent’s reaction turned a balanced contest into a memorable first victory.

The match rewards two different scorers

Nolan’s opening goal came during Jamaica’s most settled attacking period. Bent’s winner arrived from a broken set-piece situation near the end. The team therefore found goals through two different routes.

Honduras created its equaliser with a direct pass through the centre. Balbás recognised Salazar’s run before Jamaica could close the lane. Valle’s touch helped the ball reach the scorer in stride.

Salazar finished before the defenders recovered around him. Salazar’s run punished the space behind Jamaica’s midfield. Honduras remained dangerous whenever its midfield looked forward quickly.

Jamaica’s response required another period of controlled pressure. The wide players forced Honduras to clear several deliveries. One of those attacks produced the corner used by Bent.

Bent stayed close to goal after the first ball entered the area. That position allowed him to react when the defence failed to clear. His finish depended on anticipation rather than a long individual run.

The final minutes also tested Jamaica’s concentration after scoring. Honduras restarted immediately and sent players forward. Jamaica kept its shape until the referee ended the match.

Honduras equalised, but Bent later secured all three points for Jamaica. Nolan supplied the first goal before Bent struck in stoppage time. Honduras remain without a point before their next group match.
