Alice Sombath joins Tottenham after five title-winning seasons in Lyon

Tottenham have signed France defender Alice Sombath on a permanent transfer from OL Lyonnes. The move remains subject to international clearance and a work permit. Sombath can play at centre-back or on the right side of defence.

The 22-year-old leaves Lyon after five seasons around the senior team. She won five consecutive French league titles during that period. Her experience also includes Champions League matches and senior appearances for France.

A defender with two natural roles

Sombath developed mainly as a central defender but has also played at right-back. Tottenham listed both positions when announcing the transfer. Her Lyon and France appearances include work in each role.

Martin Ho described her as calm in possession and strong in defensive duels. Those were the manager’s stated reasons for welcoming the signing. He also highlighted her experience despite her age.

The defender made her senior Lyon debut in 2021. She later appeared in domestic title campaigns and the Champions League. Tottenham now become her first permanent club outside France.

Lyon provided repeated title pressure

Sombath made her Lyon senior debut in August 2021. She played 14 times during her first campaign and appeared twice in the Champions League. Those early minutes came inside a squad expected to win every competition.

The Lyon spell covers academy development and five senior seasons. Sombath leaves with title experience and repeated training inside a leading squad. Her Tottenham move begins a new league rather than a new position.

France moved her through every age group

Sombath represented France from under-16 through under-23 level. She made her senior debut against Nigeria in November 2024. That progression shows a long record inside the national system.

She then joined France for the 2025 European Championship in Switzerland. Sombath appeared in all four matches and started every group game. The tournament gave her direct experience against leading international attackers.

France used Sombath throughout the European Championship group stage. She started all three group matches and also appeared in the fourth game. Those were her first senior tournament appearances.

Several players from the same domestic leagues also met in the World Cup bronze match. England’s win over France showed the attacking quality available to both national teams.

Tottenham add experience without losing youth

At 22, Sombath arrives with room to improve and a substantial senior record. Tottenham are not signing a player only for distant development. They are adding someone who has already played title races and major tournaments.
