Dominik Szoboszlai agrees terms on a new Liverpool contract

Dominik Szoboszlai has agreed terms in principle on a new contract with Liverpool. The agreement emerged on July 16. Liverpool had not announced a signed contract by July 17.

The Hungary captain still had two years left on his existing deal. He joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for 60 million pounds in 2023. A new agreement would extend a period in which he has become one of the most important players in the team.

The reported agreement is not yet a completed signing

An agreement on terms is an important step, but it is different from a club announcement. The final documents still have to be completed. Liverpool can confirm the length and other details only after that process is finished.

As of July 17, Szoboszlai had agreed terms in principle and was expected to sign. A completed signing had not been announced.

Szoboszlai is captain of Hungary and has carried senior responsibility at club and international level. Liverpool have used him in central and attacking midfield positions. He has also started from the right in some team shapes.

That range existed before the current contract talks.

Liverpool moved before the final two years of the old deal

Szoboszlai was not close to becoming a free agent. Two years remained on the contract he signed after leaving Leipzig. Early talks gave Liverpool time to reach an agreement without an immediate deadline.

The timing also shows the value that the club places on his recent work. It protects a player who is entering the strongest years of his career. It also gives the new coaching staff a clearer view of the midfield group.

Thirteen goals made last season his best at Liverpool

His first three years brought different responsibilities

Szoboszlai arrived from the Bundesliga in 2023 and had to adjust to the speed of English football. He has since played as an attacking midfielder, a deeper midfielder and on the right side when the team needed a different shape.

That range has increased his value to Liverpool. It allows the coach to change the midfield without removing one of the main runners from the team. The new terms would recognise the place he has already earned.
